Sign of the season

Lettering Lately chalkboard wreath

Chalkboard wreaths are a fun way to practice lettering. Apologies to the birds who have built nests on our actual wreaths in the past.  Please feel free to use any of our trees!

Merry season

Lettering Lately blog

I'm really starting to like the word "merry" on it's own, regardless of the holiday or season.  But since it is the holiday season, I wish you a merry one...

Mom's best advice

Lettering Lately > Draw something every day
I have two kids who are now at the age that they listen to the advice I give on a daily basis.  They listen, and then the tell me my advice is weird, too long-winded or frequent, and occasionally helpful.  So that they don't forget all my helpful advice along with the weird and verbose, I'd like to put some of it here...

Seriously thankful

Thankful-Lettering Lately

I can't believe Thanksgiving is just around the corner.  I'm not always one for making lists, but I thought a pretty space for writing one might motivate me.  Today I'm seriously thankful for my flexible work schedule that allowed me to finish this, even though I have a few other deadlines.  I'm thankful for the nice weather outside too. There are others too, but I'm going to write them on my list...

If you want to print this for your own use, please click here and print to an 8.5 x 11 page.

Warm wishes

Lettering Lately-Wrapped

I saw a great picture of a chunky wrapped scarf on Pinterest, and immediately saw the opportunity for lettering! Hope this makes you feel warm.

Business cards with a purpose

To reveal something about myself professionally, I've been in corporate marketing and advertising for a frightening number of years.  Among other things, this experience has given me the opportunity to collect hundreds of business cards, many of which are made with nice quality cardstock... So, this is me putting my business resources to work.  I've started practicing my calligraphy on the backs of these cards.  I figure that by the time I make my way through the whole stack, I'll be a pointed pen pro.

Butterfly letters

A couple of weeks ago, the assignment on Project Runway was to create a design inspired by butterflies. In another life (a more fashionable one where I am better with a sewing machine), perhaps I would have been a fashion designer. But in this life, I sit here in my jeans and t-shirt, drawing letters... here's my attempt.

In the Fall

I've always loved fall.  Back to school supplies, warm clothes, the changing colors of the landscape.  I might like a little more sun today, but I think the rain helps make the fall weather stick.

With an oblique pen

Still working on calligraphy, and today is Oblique Pen Tuesday.  I think I like it.

Bold lines, be my friend

To reveal something about myself as an artist, I'll tell you that I've always appreciated a fine line. I like to sketch, like to see lines build upon each other, and I like the subtlety of a thin line of ink.  A Micron 005 pen has been my friend for a long time.  I was happy with the style of Picasso's Inspiration quote from my last post, but realized that it didn't translate as well when scanned in and posted online. The original drawing looked much better, if I do say so myself. So, here I am trying to be bolder, using thicker pens... I tried the script "Boldness" first, then decided that "Boldness" should be a bolder style and "Friend" should be more friendly, so I drew the second version.

Picasso was full of wisdom... -Inspiration exists
One of the added benefits of my hand-lettering endeavor is that I'm seeking out quotes and passages to use in my work.  I'm happy to report that many well-known artists are quite eloquent.  Picasso could really give it to you straight when it came to explaining his work, and I love this quote. Makes sense to me.

Getting started -calligraphy

I'm sure this quote from Karen Lamb is the first post of many blogs. It just seems fitting. It's easy not to start things--because you're too busy or you haven't planned or prepared enough.  But you have to start somewhere, right? So I'm starting to work on hand-lettering and calligraphy. In a year, I'm sure I'll be glad I did.  Welcome to my blog, Lettering Lately.
