'Tis the season for sweets

Lettering Lately > Mom's advice-eat your vegetables
I haven't been keeping up my "Mom's Best Advice" thread, so here's one.  Really, especially during this season of cookies and candy, right?

Here are a few more images from my Etsy shop... I'm intending to keep it bright, peaceful, and happy for the holidays.

Have a Bright Winter

Lettering Lately > BrightWinter Studio etsy shop
My Etsy shop is still a work in progress... Here's my new BrightWinter Studio logo. I wanted it to be a mix of lettering styles, bright (of course), and focused on purple.  What do you think?

Hey Sunshine, I haven't seen you in a long time... Why don't you show your face and bend my mind?

Summer's end

Now summer vacation is like a distant memory... We spent a nice week on the Chesapeake Bay at a home named "Bonate" meaning "Good Earth." The kids collected drift wood, and this is a piece I lettered for the home owner.

Chinese Proverb

Lettering Lately > If we do not change our direction, we are likely to end up where we are headed
Makes sense, right? But sometimes you need someone to call it out for you. I like how some of the Chinese proverbs can tell it like it is.

Eleven is sweet.

Lettering Lately birthday

Lettering Lately > Eleven is Colorful
It seems that as kids get older, there is less interest in adorable birthday themes.  Gone are the days of princesses, book characters, and animals.  So while we went pretty low-key on the theme, I'm glad my favorite new eleven-year-old let me use my obsessive interest to make signs for her party. Sweet!

Thanks to our teachers

Lettering Lately > Teacher appreciation

A little late with posting, but I was happy to make these signs for the Teacher Appreciation Day luncheon at my kids' school.  It really takes a special talent, a big heart, and a lot of patience to teach, and I for one truly appreciate it.

Have a sunny, restful day

Lettering Lately

Working on some cards. Though going to the post office is not my strength, I do love real cards. Hope I can actually send some for Mother's Day...

Save the scraps!

When you have prolific young artists in the house (or kids who just like to cut things with scissors), you can collect a lot of paper recycling in a short amount of time.  And the same goes for grown-up calligraphers and doodlers too. What if we tried our own kind of art-inspired recycling and gave the scraps new life? Let's see what we can create, shall we? Happy belated Earth Day.

Statement Necklace

Statement Necklace-Lettering Lately

Statement Necklace-Lettering Lately

Now that Spring has arrived (fingers crossed), I'm looking at Spring fashions...I do like those big statement necklaces, but I'm not really sure I can pull them off. So here's my attempt to make some kind of statement using them, but not wearing them.

I'm a hopeful student of yoga... hopeful that I can actually make it to a class every now and then.  I really do enjoy it (and to all the naysayers, yes it does help one to get in shape!) As a reminder to myself, I opted in to a yoga email newsletter that recently had an article about laughter. It seems that "laughter is the best medicine" is not just a cliché, it's an actual thing. Laughing offers mental and physical health benefits, and faking it is fine. In fact there are laughter clubs all over the country helping people to engage in laughter yoga.  How happy.

Tweeting in my mind

I've been trying to get a better understanding of Twitter, since it seems like it's here to stay.  So I opened up a Twitter account and started following a few people.  I haven't tweeted yet, and I don't know when I will. I'm still unsure about the etiquette, what might be tweetable, and who would even read my tweets if I posted them.  However, I seem to be thinking about potential tweets quite often. Is it healthy to reduce your thoughts to 140 characters or less?

Lucky > Lettering Lately

Feeling lucky that I can work from home, squeezing in lettering and drawing during down time.  What makes you feel lucky?

It's Friday...

I wanted to try hand-lettering something longer and with a variety of styles for fun.
Loving the lyrics from the Cure's Friday I'm in Love.

Happy Friday!

Draw more!

I believe that hobbies can help us cut down on less productive activities. Something enjoyable that can fill our free time--what's the downside to that? If you do something you love more often, what will you do less?  Shop? Eat? Whine?

I just wanted to be clear on this topic.  In case anyone is reading this or anything...

Just give it a try...

Lettering Lately-please stop complaining
Here in my hand lettering practice, I'm sometimes at a loss for something relevant to write. Commenting on the snow and ice and related traffic and school delays seems to be the popular thing to do these days, but I don't really want to contribute to all of that. So after some deep contemplation, I've decided that this simple request is something I'd like to try to live up my social  media comments and in real life.  Let's stop complaining. Thanks.
