Bright Wishes for 2016

Bright Wishes snal mail - free sign up
It's been quite a while since I've posted. I've been thinking about new lettering endeavors, among other things.  And I've decided that I really would like to do something nice with my lettering practice in the coming year. So I've decided to offer Bright Wishes Snail Mail. It's mail that will be sent right to an actual, physical mail box, provided for no reason other than to cheer someone up. And it's free.

Mailings will include an inspirational quote or phrase, hand-lettered by me and digitally printed on cardstock. The size might vary each time, but it will fit in a regular envelope which I will also hand-address. I'll send them every other month, maybe more.

So, if you know someone who could use a little cheer or inspiration in their mailbox, please sign them up. Maybe they are lonely, sick, or just overwhelmed. Hopefully this mail will bring a smile. Maybe they'll keep it. Maybe they'll share it. Each one will be like a little surprise.

Sign up by sending me the person's name and mailing address via this form or email. You can tell me their story, or don't. It's up to you. If you do, it might help inspire the next quote I choose to send, but I won't use the information for anything else. And I won't tell them you signed them up. I'll leave that up to you if you choose. I won't use their addresses for anything else, and if they want to unsubscribe, they can just email me. I'll include a note telling them that. There are no strings attached.

I will get benefits from this... I'll get a new outlet for my lettering practice, and will have another motivation to try new styles and layouts. I'll get to use up some of my extra paper and envelopes. I'll also get to know (or think, anyway) that I'm doing something nice, however small it might be, for someone who needs it.

Check back here for updates about this program.  Tell your friends to visit here to and sign people up. You can also check my Instagram feed (@brightwinterstudio) for pictures of the pieces I send.

Mailings start in January.

A little art

Sometimes it's difficult to find time for new ideas, especially with the craziness of summer schedules and all. Just as the kids were heading back to school, I became aware of this sweet Instagram campaign from Victoria Johnson Designs, #allittleart. The challenge is to branch out by creating a small piece of art each day, 2.5" or smaller. Here are my first attempts. Accompanied by a little lettering, of course...

Work-life balance

Lettering practice works perfectly with my other job. While I'm waiting for feedback or in between calls, I can work with just a pen and scrap paper. Here, I came across some meaningful quotes that remind me of my kids...

Custom hand-lettered quotes

I'm very happy to have had some custom lettering opportunities lately. I love when a customer comes to me with a quote they love and asks me to give it life with lettering.

Here are a couple of recent pieces I've created for special customers...

BrightWinter Studio subscriptions

I love some of the creative monthly subscription offers I'm seeing--craft-of-the-month, soap-of-the-month, surprise-of-the-month (and I like the more traditional wine- or cheese-of-the-month kind of thing too.) Now available at BrightWinter Studio: Bright Wishes subscriptions, offering an art quote each month. They are hand drawn, then printed, hand detailed with white or metallic inks. Delivered in a hand-lettered envelope. I will have fun creating a new piece each month and helping you spread a little cheer.

Make mistakes into something beautiful

Working on some lettering for a craft room.  I like a reminder that you can take a mistake and turn it into something else, rather than scrapping the project and starting over.  But I'm not settled on the colors yet...

You are my favorite.

Thinking about Valentine's Day. Also thinking about the awesome people who have favorited items on my Etsy shop.  Thanks!

What can you do in 2 hours?

Lettering Lately blog > Snow Day

It's Snow Day and 2-hour delay season! So, what can we do in 2 hours (other than getting a little extra sleep)?  I would love to collect some good ideas.
